Unblocking Drains, Sinks, Toilets, and Outside Drainage Systems for Cheshire and Surrounding Areas

Blocked drains are unavoidable from time to time, and are most commonly caused by a build-up of fat, grease, baby wipes, leaves, soil and roots. These materials collect on the outside of the drains and gradually cause a blockage.

We offer services for unblocking drains, blocked toilets and sinks, outside drains, blocked manholes and inspection chambers throughout Cheshire, for both domestic and commercial properties. Signs of a blocked drain are usually fairly obvious, and include slow draining pipes, toilets and sinks, rising toilet water, unpleasant smells, and gurgling noises from your drains.

When you have a blocked drain, the only way to clear this completely is to seek professional help, household drain cleaner may work for a short period, but the problem will soon return as the product is not strong enough to clear the blockage.

There are also other risks to consider with blocked drains, such as health and safety issues where sewage is concerned, and the potential damage that could be caused to the drains if a blockage is left to build up.

How to unblock a drain

Depending on the type of blockage, and where it is, we have a number of ways to clear your drains and have them running smoothly again. Blockages are commonly built up of fat and grease, baby wipes or leaves and soil, they form a solid mass on the outside of the drains and slowly build up until there is a noticeable blockage. To clear this completely requires equipment to break apart the blockage and flush it through the systems.

Drain Jetting

Our high pressure water jetting equipment is able to clear the toughest of blockages. The pressure of the water breaks up the blockage and flushes it through the drainage system to enable the pipe to run freely. Jetting works as an efficient method for drain unblocking as it breaks down common causes of blockages, such as fat and grease.

Drain Rodding

Some blockages are smaller and not so stubborn, and therefore do not need the power of the water jet. Specialist drain rods and rotary mechanical rods will be more practical in these situations. Drain rods can be bought fairly cheaply from a number of stores or online, however as with drain cleaner, they are unlikely to work as well as professional equipment and may only solve the problem temporarily.

Common causes of blocked drains

Blocked toilets

The most common culprit of a clogged toilet is baby wipes. Baby wipes do not break down, and are not flushable despite some claiming to be.

Other common toilet blockages are sanitary items, nappies, and tissue paper other than toilet paper that is not designed to be flushed. Household cleaners and toilet unblocker will not have any lasting effect on these items.

Calls to unclog a toilet are quite common, as a lot of people aren’t aware that wipes are not flushable. Dispose of these in the bin and avoid costly blockages or potential damage to your drainage system.

Blocked sinks

Kitchen sinks are a victim of grease, fats and oils! Food waste should always be disposed of in the bin or in compost, and by-products of cooking should be treated the same way. Fat, grease and oil from pans and plates is washed down the sink and even in small amounts will gradually build up around the edge of the pipes, resulting in a clogged drain.

Blocked bathroom sinks are usually blocked by hair, and a build-up of toiletry products, such as face wash, soap and toothpaste. Help things run smoothly by washing these products down well with water, and have a hair trap over the plughole.

General cleaning products, sink unblocker and DIY methods can help to alleviate the problem, but again this is only a very short term solution.

Blocked baths and showers

Again this is very likely to be caused by hair, and a build-up of products. A hair trap over the plugholes will stop the majority of it being washed down the drain, greatly reducing the chance of a blockage.

Blocked outside drain

Outside drains are most commonly blocked by a build-up of silt, leaves and debris. If the drain from the sink seems to be blocked, then it is likely to be a build-up of fat and grease.

Your outside drainage system contains many elements, including manholes, soil pipes, rainwater pipes, foul water drains and surface water drains. If you are unsure of where the blockage may be, we can carry out a CCTV survey to discover the location and cause.
